Dr. Yan Qi | Ph.D., P.E. - Associate Professor, SIUE Department of Civil Engineering
will be presenting on:
Research on IL Roadway Winter Maintenance - Snow and Ice Control
It has long been recognized that snow and ice on roadways have adverse impacts on winter operation and safety. Therefore, snow and ice control has been the main roadway winter maintenance activity of transportation agencies. Large amounts of taxpayer dollars were spent on winter maintenance labor, equipment, and material. Statistical relationships between historical weather conditions and resources expended when maintaining roads at the expected level of service in Illinois were examined. Based on the results, a Winter Index (a formula to describe winter weather) was developed for IL. It will help agencies prepare winter maintenance budget and optimize the allocation of resources. A snow fence is a wind barrier installed along roadways to tackle drifting and blowing snow issues. The snow trapping abilities of snow fenced sites and control sites in IL were compared using statistical models. The results proved the effectiveness of living snow fences and provide useful information for living snow fence design in IL. In addition, a sensitivity study of benefit cost ratios of different types of snow fences in IL was conducted. The results will justify the use of safety improvement funds for installing snow fences.
