Planning Today for CAVs Tomorrow: Planning-Level Capacity Adjustments
Transportation planning agencies are struggling to prepare for a future with connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) without understanding what their impacts will be. Will CAVs increase roadway capacity? Will the capacity impacts be the same for freeways and arterials? How wide should roadways be built to accommodate future traffic demand?
This presentation highlights the research behind the brand-new updates to the Highway Capacity Manual to add capacity adjustment factors for CAVs. A pooled fund study sponsored by 11 state DOTs is examining how CAV technologies will influence capacity in the future. Agencies can use this information in their long-range scenario planning to estimate the range of impacts that they might see in the future.
